Oh my gosh, just when we thought Volta was on the mend. We spoke to soon. Volta was not eating all his hard feed again, this time he did not even hoe into his hay which he normally always loves to eat. The very next day he had some more mucus coming from his nose this time it was not so clear. Yes I panicked as some of us do, Wes is the logical one who keeps the calm in the stable. He has always had a good sense of what step to take next and that’s what we did. Team Joyce decided to call the vet.
The vet came that afternoon and gave Volta the once over and checked him from head to hoof. His temperature was a little high but still not enough to worry about. It was suggested we place him a course of injections for 5 days to help his immunity system attack the bug, this was not serious that one should stress about but being Volta we needed the reassurance he would properly recover this time. The vet also advised us not to put him in the wet paddock for at least one week. Volta only wore his rugs when he is in the stable and not out in the paddock ,so it was a suggestion to keep him stabled, rugged and cosy day and night. This was an easy task for Team Joyce as he is our precious colt and we want him to get better.
What a rocky road , now we shall wait and see! Volta has again lost some weight,Team Joyce have decided to weigh him mid month to give his followers a guide on what he actually weighs to give a guidance for guessing what you think his weight will be by end of September. We feel this has to be done to help us all determine how his progress will go. Even the vet wants us to phone him with his progress and weight total as we do not want him to loose to much more weight! We have been going down to the stable a lot to check on Volta and closely monitor his feed and water intake.

Has this horse been swabbed for strangles? The abcess photo made me immediately think strangles, and horses can remain carries of the strep. infection. Hope he is on the mend.
Thanks Jaime for your thoughts, yes the vet has given us the all clear so we are sure Volta will be back to his normal self in a few days.
